INTERNATIONAL COURSE: Two weeks of birding in Costa Rica: ... August, 2009 (days to be defined) PLACES: The course in offered in four biogeographic regions in Costa Rica, as follows: Central Valley (Tropical Moist Forest), Monteverde Cloud Forests, Guanacaste Dry Forests, Northern Atlantic region (Tropical Wet Forests). This way, this course offers opportunities of both birding and getting to know a great deal of Costa Rica . It has been considered also a unique way to get the first contact with tropical environments. LANGUAGE: English PARTICIPANTS: Professionals and lay persons in biology, forestry, biodiversity, ecology and other areas in the natural resources field. The ideal participants would be persons who do not have a formal training in ornithology, but who want to become proficient bird watchers in a short time. Also those persons who are wildlife photographers or are related to nature conservation and wildlife management activities. OBJECTIVES: Intensive instruction in field identification of Costarrican avifauna, which includes a great deal of the Neotropical bird species and even migratory species from temperate zones, as well. Complementary instruction on other topics leading to the understanding of the various groups of birds' role in the ecosystem are also given. COURSE DESCRIPTION: The course is both field practical and theoretical. Field practices are devoted mostly to observation and identification, including bird calls. As for identification we follow an approach based on the efficient methodology applied in the "Tropical Dendrology courses" described in this Website. Field practices on identification are complemented by lectures and group discussions on other subjects such as morphology, feeding, nesting, breeding, habits, behavior, distribution, migrations, use of habitat, conservation, photography techniques. However, the emphasis of the course will be on the techniques for a field identification. Lectures and group discussions are scheduled during field trips within four regions in Costa Rica. TEAM OF INSTRUCTORS: You will be under the direction of experienced instructors. COSTS AND FINANCING: The course costs US$ 1,800.00
which includes: course fees, materials, lodging and meals, course-related local transportation, farewell dinner, and a
certificate of participation. Airfare is not included. The course schedule includes 13 days of academic activities. Thus, participants should allow one day (Sunday) to arrive and one day (Sunday) to depart.
